as i understand it, AOL instant mesenger conversations ar eunprotected and not secure when they are transmited.
is there a program out there that will encrypt the conversations?
granted both the sender and reciever would have to have the software or security seup implemented in order for this to work, but are these applications out there that will do this?
thanks

you have to pay for encryption. I think it's like $5 maybe... but each person in the conversation would have to buy it.

Alternately, you could use a client like Trillian or GAIM - but their encryption is also only within the scope of that client (i.e.: Trillian encryption only works with other Trillian clients that have it enabled).

Yes. Trillian is very nice, that is all I use anymore.

Aim supports encryption natively, all you need is a security cert.

I do NOT reccommend aimencrypt - it's next to worthless with everyone using the same key.

You can get a free cert from a CA like thawte (http://www.thawte.com/secure-email/personal-email-certificates/index.html) or from someone who provides the certificate generation (http://www.schaefer.nu/request.html) or a free (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/aimcert/). I'd get the thawte cert as you won't have problems with untrusted CA warnings.
